Shark liver oil has been used by fisherman for centuries as a folk remedy for relieving general debility, for healing wounds, sores, irritations of the respiratory tract and the alimentary canal, and for reducing lymph node swelling. shark liver oil from Greenland is rich in alkyglycerols, which are naturally found in breast milk and n bone marrow. That from Alaska is rich in vitamin A and D, and in essential omega-3 fatty acids. Greenland shark liver oil contains the highest level of alkyglycerols found in nature. The active ingredients are predominantly esters of selachyl-, chimyl-, and batyl-alcohol, and methoxy-substituted compounds of glycerol. There are 16 known alkyglycerols, with shark liver oil containing the most concentrated source.
Alkyglycerols are involved in the production of white blood cells. Shark liver oil was found to stimulate the body's immune system, increasing antibodies, leukocytes and thrombocytes. In particular, it was found to increase the survival rate of cervical cancer patients, and to reduce radiation -induced injuries of leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. Recent research has also shown that alkyglycerols have anti iotic and anti-fungal effects, can speed up healing of wounds, and can increase the excretion of mercury.
There is no known toxicity in using it.
