In Europe, the civilization of Ancient Greece had learned much about healing from Egypt and Mesopotamia, but Hippocrates built on this to establish the first Western scientific system of medicine. He saw disease as having natural, rather than magical, causes and employed about 400 different drugs, mostly from plants, to treat them. The Alexandrian School of medicine was set up a little later and it was during this period that some of the earliest written herbals were produced. The most famous Greek herbal was produced in the first century AD by Dioscorides, a doctor working with the Roman army who made many observations on his wide travels. This work, the De material medica, became an important reference work for the following 1500 years, and was copied and illustrated with beautiful paintings.
